It may seem like a no-brainer when it comes to packing, but you would be surprised to find out how a haphazard packing job can damage your belongings and create a giant headache come time to unpack. Whether you are packing because of a move to a new home or office or are even considering hiring professional packers, here are some packing tips to keep in mind.

Categorize items: You don’t want to pack your fine china with your lawn equipment. A wise way to pack is by room and items. For instance, all kitchenware and dining items should be kept together. Not only does it make sense to pack similar items together, but it allows you to remember where you put things and you can unpack by room. This will reduce the chances of you misplacing something.

Labels: This goes hand in hand with the categorization of your packing. Be sure to clearly label each box – “Kitchen,” “Bedroom,” etc. You can pick up labels at your local office supply store. Don’t forget a thick black Sharpie! Also, be sure to write “FRAGILE” on any boxes that contain delicate items. By labeling your boxes, you are not only keeping track of what you have already packed, but making it easier to find the proper items when you are unpacking your belongings.

"Fluff”: I am referring to bubble wrap, newspaper, packing peanuts, etc. as “fluff.” All these items keep your delicate belongings protected. When packing anything breakable – glass, ceramic, porcelain, etc. make sure you fill the boxes of these items with “fluff.” It is smart to wrap each individual breakable item in newspaper or bubble wrap and secure it with tape to keep the item intact with the protective wrapping.

Boxes and containers: While cardboard boxes are the most popular option for packing your belongings, you can also use plastic containers sold at Target, Wal-Mart and Home Depot. These containers come with lids that snap for a secure fit. Adding some packaging tape across the lid will prevent the lid from popping off, if you’ve stuffed it to the brim.
