Relocating to a new place, whether it’s a new city, state or even country, can be exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. To ease any apprehension you may have, try to think of it as an adventure or a fresh start. If you focus on the positive of your relocation it will help you get acclimated and enjoy your new home. Below are some tips to keep in mind when relocating.

Planning – It is necessary to have a detailed plan prior to packing up and moving. You will want to visit your new location at least once before moving there to make sure you feel comfortable and familiarize yourself with your new surroundings. This will also give you the opportunity to find a new house or apartment in an area that you like and could picture yourself living in. If you have children, it is important that you find a safe neighborhood with reputable schools and childcare services. Also before you move, you will want to find new doctors, a pharmacy, etc.

Exploration – During your visit before the move or when you first move to your new location, it is very important to take some time to explore the area. Make sure that you find your local grocery store, drug store, hospital, shopping centers, etc. This can help you feel comfortable in your new location. You should also explore local parks, downtown areas, museums, movie theaters and malls. If you are going to be living in a more rural area with less action, find the nearest cities with stuff to do.

Packing – Do not wait until the last minute to pack. Start packing ahead of time and consider doing one room at a time. Decide if you will be hiring professional packers and movers, or if you will be doing this yourself. If you will be taking it into your own hands, make sure you get high quality packing supplies – boxes, tape, bubble wrap, etc. – so that your belongings get safely transported to your new home.

Network – Establishing a social life is a big part of relocating, especially if you will be moving somewhere where you don’t know anyone. It can be a little intimidating in the beginning, but having friends will make life in your new location more fun! Get plugged into the local community, whether it is some kind of club, church or organization. If you like to exercise, join a gym or fitness class. Mothers with young children should consider joining a playgroup to meet other moms.

If you are still a bit nervous about moving to a new place, just remember that you are not alone and people relocate every single day. To set your mind at ease plan future trips back to your old location to visit friends and family. This will give you something to look forward to, and remember that with technology these days, everyone is just a phone call or text message away!
