Many of our self storage facilities are located in Florida so we know the importance of being properly prepared for hurricane season. Here in the Atlantic, hurricane season begins June 1st and ends November 30th. During this time it is important to be prepared for any storms that may come to pass. To help you get ready here are a few important steps to keep you and your family safe.

Gather important information- First it is important to know if you live in an evacuation area, this way you can assess the risks to your home. Next, create a list of contacts for easy access in case of emergency such as:

    • County Law Enforcement
    • County Public Safety Fire/Rescue
    • State, County and City/Town Government
    • Local Hospitals
    • Local Utilities
    • Local American Red Cross
    • Local TV Stations
    • Local Radio Stations
    • Your Property Insurance Agent

Create a supply kit- A basic supply kit is very important since you never know what to expect or how long you may be without power, water, etc. Here is a list of supplies from FEMA’s supply list:

    • Water: one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, food drinking and sanitation
    • Food: at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
    • Battery powered radio
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • First aid kit
    • Whistle to signal for help
    • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape
    • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
    • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
    • Manual can opener for food
    • Local maps
    • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Know when to evacuate- Allow yourself enough time to pack and inform family or friends in case you need to evacuate. Follow all the instructions given by local officials. It is important to leave immediately when instructed. Remember to carefully consider all your options when deciding to evacuate. Being prepared and taking a proactive approach is very important in keeping everyone together and safe.

Extra storage- While you and your family are staying out of harms way; Stor-All Storage is taking every precaution to ensure the safety of your belongings. There are many items that you may want to store in the event of bad weather but don’t have the space in your house. Any extra items such as patio furniture, boat, car, etc. would be perfect to store in a storage unit.
